WHY DO WE HAVE LGBTQ+ HISTORY MONTH?
LGBTQ+ History Month is a month-long annual celebration of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender and non-binary history, including the history of LGBT+ rights and related civil rights movements. In the United Kingdom it is celebrated in February each year, to coincide with the 2003 abolition of Section 28. LGBT+ History Month was initiated in the UK by Schools Out UK and first took place in February 2005. The event is intended to raise awareness of, and combat prejudice against, LGBT people and history. Read about Schools Out UK and the work they do here.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO CELEBRATE LGBTQ+ HISTORY?
LGBTQ+ people have existed throughout all time. However, due to LGBTphobic laws and societal attitudes that have existed throughout history, many of the accomplishments and achievements of LGBT+ people are unknown by many today. By highlighting the existence of LGBT+ people from history and their accomplishments, we can celebrate the impact their work has had, and use the opportunity to highlight the equality work and change that still needs to happen.
