πŸ‘‘Non-Binary Drag Queens πŸ‘‘

Every Monday I'll be posting about my favourite Drag Queens, focusing on trans and non binary Queens! I'll also do posts with Drag Queen book and podcast recommendations!

BIMINI BON BOULASH
THEY/THEM

Bimini is non-binary and opened up about coming to terms with their gender identity in a conversation on Episode 3 of Drag Race with fellow contestant Ginny Lemon. Their open conversation was praised by many and sparked confidence in many to discuss their gender identity with those closest to them. Bimini has consumed an exclusively vegan diet for seven years. Before pursuing drag as a career, they also completed a degree in journalism

Bimini has professionally fulfilled their career as a drag queen since 2019, and was heavily inspired to kick start their career by the spirit of their fashion heroes Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood, Iris van Herpen, and John Galliano. Bimini has stated that their greatest inspiration as to their look and aesthetic is Pamela Anderson. Their drag name derives from what they would be called if they were assigned female at birth, and the name of their first cat, Bonnie Boulash. In December 2020, Bimini was announced as one of twelve contestants competing on the second series of RuPaul's Drag Race UK. In Episode 1, Bimini lip-synced against Joe Black to "Relax" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood, which they won and sent Joe home. They later won four challenges, including the Snatch Game where they portrayed Katie Price, becoming the first contestant in the British version to win four challenges. In Episode 9, Bimini became the first contestant to reach the finale after lip syncing in the first episode. After a final lipsync in Episode 10, they were announced as a runner-up, along with fellow competitor Tayce, to eventual winner Lawrence Chaney.

In February 2021, Bon Boulash made their London Fashion Week runway debut alongside fellow Drag Race contestant A'Whora with Art School London, a genderless fashion label for designer Eden Loweth’s AW21 collection In March 2021, Bimini, alongside her fellow Drag Race finalists, was photographed and interviewed for The Guardian. After becoming the queen of hearts during their run on RuPaul's Drag Race U.K. series two Bimini has been releasing announcement after announcement. The drag star has done quite a number of photoshoots, has announced a book, signed on to a public relations firm, and more. Now, they are announcing that they have been signed to Next Models in London, this is a huge step for the non binary community.

GINNY LEMON
THEY/THEM

Ginny Lemon is a drag performer and recording artist best known for competing on the second series of RuPaul's Drag Race UK. They are known for their alternative and highly campy drag. Ginny has appeared at Birmingham's SHOUT Festival of Queer Arts and Culture. They appeared on The X Factor in 2017. Ginny Lemon eliminated themself from the competition in a lip sync round with fellow competitor Sister Sister. They have since said that they felt uncomfortable with some of the judges' comments, arguing that RuPaul and Michelle Visage did not understand British humour, and pushed Ginny towards a female-orientated concept of glamour. Ginny Lemon also criticised RuPaul's emotional outburst on the show, where RuPaul criticised Joe Black's outfit (which occurred after Ginny had left), tweeting: "Screaming and swearing at desperate out of work queens for being too regional and unable to afford costumes after 7 months of jobless despair... Nah babz I’m better off at home fank u very much".

Ginny says they struggled with the earlier eliminations of queens like Joe Black and Asttina Mandella, who were close friends of Ginny's before the competition. "You could see me in the back sobbing," Ginny says. "Those two people were my friends before I went on the show. Ginny adds that they didn't ever intend to win the show - but instead entered with the hope of mixing things up. “I went in there to break the binary, I went there to be myself, I did not go there to win a competition”. In an earlier episode, Ginny also started a big conversation online about being non-binary - a term used to describe people who don't identify as male or female. Non-binary people often use they/them rather than gendered pronouns. During their chat with fellow queen Bimini Bon Boulash, the two queens both talked about their shared experiences with being non-binary. Ginny explained their feelings of self loathing and being made to feel worthless.
