🖤 Black History Month🖤

What is Black History Month?

Black History Month is an annual event created to promote knowledge and understanding of the historical achievements made by Black People, communities, and movements. It is also a celebration of the media made by, and culture of, the African Diaspora.

It first started as a weekly event in the USA - 1926, Carter G Woodson established African Caribbean celebrations before it evolved into the Black History Month we know today. In 1987, The UK's version of Black History Month was founded by Ghanaian born Akyaaba Addai Sebo, a special projects officer at the Greater London Council, inspired by a visit to America in the 1970's

Why do we celebrate Black History Month?

Most history taught in UK schools is still predominantly focused on white people and their achievements. Having a month every year for not just schools but all of society to focus on teaching and celebrating Black history makes sure that it is remembered by the whole population.

Racism is still a big issue, and Black History Month is a reminder to us to check how systemic oppression affects the Black community as well as highlighting Black-owned businesses, organisations and people campaigning for change.

Why October?

There are two reasons thought to be behind why Black History Month is celebrated in October in the UK - traditionally, October is when African chiefs and leaders gather to settle their differences, so Akyaaba Addai Sebo chose this month to connect with African roots. Additionally, many thought that since it was the beginning of the new academic year, October would give Black children a sense of pride and identity.

In the USA, Black History Month is celebrated in February. This month was chosen as it coincides with the births of former US President Abraham Lincoln, and abolitionist Frederick Douglass, who escaped slavery and became a key social activist. Both men played a significant role in helping to end slavery.
