Alicia Garza and Lady Phyll
Alicia Garza, co-founder of the Black Lives Matter Movement
She isn't afraid to wear her blackness or queerness loudly. She started the whole movement with one Facebook post that ended with the words 'black lives matter' and forced a nation to wake up to the racial inequity that is so rife. She now holds many accolades and hasn't given up using her voice to occupy spaces where historically these parts of her identity were outlawed.
Lady Phyll, British founder of UK Black Pride
Lady Phyll is the co-funder, trustee and executive director of UK Black Pride, which promotes unity and co-operation among Black people of African, Asian, Caribbean, Middle Eastern and Latin American descent, as well as their friends and families who identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Transgender.
Phyll was appointed trustee of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights charity, Stonewall in January 2015 but resigned three years later when the charity announced it would partner with UK Black Pride.
