The Wicked + The Divine
POSTED BY SAM
“Every ninety years, twelve gods are incarnated as humans. They are loved. They are hated. In two years, they are dead.”
This is the promise at the beginning of The Wicked + The Divine, a 51 issues comic series by writer Kieron Gillen and illustrator Jamie McKelvie, and it’s one of the things that drew me to the series - there was a nice definitive quality in that last sentence that suggested the creators had a plan. It wasn’t until the main character, Laura Wilson, went to a convention (the Fantheon) in the ExCeL that I fell in love with the series. I hadn’t read many comics with a grounding in England at the time, and definitely none in a contemporary setting.
The series does a great job of looking at fandom and showing it at its best and worse, constantly comparing its pantheon of characters to musicians, from most of the gods being based after pop stars to the elaborate shows they put on for crowds of fans.
The series has received much praise for its cast diverse in race, sexual orientation, and gender identity. More of the cast is LGBTQIA+ than not, and all relationships are given the same weight no matter who they’re between or how long they last. This is one of my favourite comics.
BLOOM
POSTED BY ALIX-REY
Bloom by Kevin Panetta, illustrated by Savanna Ganucheau If you like Heartstopper then you will LOVE Bloom. High school is over and Ari is dying to move to the big city with his bandmates, but can he persuade his dad to let him quit his job at the family bakery? Ari loved working there as a kid and cannot fathom wasting his life away over rising dough and hot ovens.. But while interviewing candidates for his replacement, Ari meets Hector, an easygoing guy who loves baking as much as Ari wants to escape it. As they become closer over batches of bread, love is ready to bloom . . . that is, if Ari doesn’t ruin everything.
I loved this comic so much, the illustrations are beautiful and the story melted my heart! If you want to read more LGBTQ+ fiction but struggle with reading pages and pages of words then I recommend this comic!
