EUPHORIA
POSTED BY SAM

Euphoria isn’t an easy watch (a lot of trigger warnings going in to this), but I did find it a rewarding one. It explores the struggle of finding meaning at the edge of youth, in the face of all the issues a group of high schoolers could face. Zendaya shines in the leading role as Rue (for which she won 4 awards), but it’s the wide supporting cast that makes the show special. Built up of Rue’s peers and their families, the show manages to find the right characters to tackle most issues that a young adult could face, exploring sexuality, relationships, and identity through subjects like addiction and trauma.

My favorite character is Jules, a new arrival to town. Transgender actor Hunter Schafer brings her own experiences to the character not only in the acting, but also through getting to co-write next to series creator Sam Levinson on an episode where Jules is the focus. Schafer brings a raw realness to the subject matter that delivers an emotional punch unlike anything else on tv.

TALES OF THE CITY
POSTED BY ALIX-REY

Tales of the City sees the Return of Mary Ann to 28 Barbary Lane in San Francisco after a 23-year absence for the 90th birthday of her former landlady, Anna Madrigal. Mary Ann is happily reunited with Michael Tolliver and Anna, but things are more complicated with her ex-husband, Brian Hawkins, and Shawna, the daughter she left behind to pursue a broadcasting career. Shawna follows a mysterious attraction to a new girl in town who is making a documentary about 28 Barbary Lane. Anna begins receiving mysterious letters threatening to expose a secret from her past, what could her secret be?

What do I love about Tales of the City? The fact that queer people are playing queer characters! most of the cast are openly gay, trans or non binary, how amazing is that? PLUS 2 guest appearances from some of my favourite drag queens (you’ll have to watch it to find out who).

Tales of the City has an incredible representation of the LGBTQ+ community as well as subject matters that are relevant today. We see debates between the 80’s San Francisco gay community and Ben, who is a much younger black and gay man. Families who aren't as accepting or understanding of the LGBTQ+ community and how relationships can break down after realising your sexuality and gender identity.
You can watch all episodes on Netflix.
