STEVEN UNIVERSE
Steven Universe is a coming-of-age musical sci-fi series that ran for five seasons (160 episodes) on Cartoon Network between 2013 and 2019. It was followed by a movie and a single season sequel series. The show follows the character of Steven Universe and his 3 guardians, the Crystal Gems, as they save his hometown from extra-terrestrial threats. The Crystal Gems (Garnet, Amethyst and Pearl) are alien gemstones that rebelled from an all female space dictatorship along with Steven's mother, who since died. Through the shows amazing world building you get to know most of Beach City's residents as well as a lot of the people and places out in the further galaxy.
Rebecca Sugar, the creator of the show, is bisexual and non-binary using she/they pronouns. She wanted the show to focus on all kinds of love, from parental and friendships, to relationships and queer love. The show includes lots of LGBTQIA+ characters including some non-binary and bisexual, as well as showcasing a lesbian wedding. Steven Universe handles gender and identity in a more mature manner than some shows aimed at older audiences, and Rebecca has said the series was designed to be diverse and challenge gender roles to help children better understand themselves.
