🌈Queer Cartoons - The Owl House✨
The Owl House is a 2020 fantasy animated series produced by Disney Television Animation for the Disney Channel. The series follows Luz Noceda, a human teenager who accidentally stumbles into a world of monsters and magic called the Boiling Isles. In this new land, Luz is taken in by the owner of the Owl House, Eda Clawthorne, and along with a great cast of side characters learns how to use magic despite her lack of genetic ability. Before the first season was released the show was already renewed for a second, which started airing in the US on the 12th of June, 2021. The third (and final) season has also been greenlit.
Luz Noceda is Disney’s first bisexual lead character. Series creator Dana Terrace discussed in a Twitter thread how she was “very open about [her] intention to put queer kids in the main cast,” and the fact that Disney allowed her to follow through was met with wide praise. A highlight from season one is the episode “Enchanting Grom Fright” in which a side character confirmed to be a Lesbian by Terrace tries to ask her crush out to prom. It’s the kind of relatable LGBTQIA+ rep that often gets buried, and seeing it in a flagship Disney product is great.
