LOKI

Loki has been in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for over 10 years, with Tom Hiddleston having a supporting role in six out of the twenty-three films. Today the god of mischief makes a stand on his own with a new Disney+ original series, but… did you know that in the comics Loki is queer?

Loki has long been a shape shifter, being able to change his form and sex to suit is needs, but wasn’t until Al Ewing’s 2014 series Loki: Agent of Asgard where Loki’s gender identity itself was explored. During this run Loki made reference multiple times to always being his true self; this paid off in one of the later issues where, while in his feminine form, she repeats that “I’m always me,” and refers to herself as the goddess of stories. In the same run Ewing touches on Loki’s bisexual identity. Since then, author Mackenzi Lee (who wrote the 2019 book Loki: Where Mischief Lies) has called Loki gender-fluid and pansexual.

In a teaser for the new series, on an official TVA document we see Loki’s gender listed as “fluid” and, with Lady Loki casting rumours popping up for a while, maybe this series will finally give the Marvel Cinematic Universe the LGBTQIA+ representation it’s been missing. We’ll hopefully find out soon, as Loki is now streaming on Disney+.
