πWhy do we celebrate Pride Month?π
What is Pride Month and why do we celebrate it?
Pride month is a month dedicated to celebrating and uplifting the LGBTQ+ community worldwide. Typically pride month is celebrated with parades all over the world in big cities and even smaller towns. Parades will usually consist of marches down streets, live music and drag king/queen events. Unfortunately due to COVID-19, 2020 and 2021 Pride month is being celebrated a little differently with more virtual events to ensure everyone is safe.
Pride Month is all about bringing the community together and showing support to each other as well as ally’s showing their support for the community. On Pride Month we remember those who fought for the LGBTQ+ rights that we have today and celebrate the lives of those who are no longer with us, but were a huge part of the community.
So why do we celebrate Pride month in June?
The reason why June was chosen as Pride month is because of the Stonewall riots. The Stonewall riots were a series of spontaneous demonstrations by members of the LGBTQ+ community in response to a police raid that began in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969.
An American lady called Brenda Howard is known as 'The Mother of Pride' after organising the first ever gay pride march.
