In 2011 Jamie Campbell was the focus of a documentary which followed his plan to go to his school prom wearing a dress. This documentary, Jamie: Drag Queen at 16, went on to inspire hit stage musical 'Everybody's Talking About Jamie'. This yeah, 10 years after the original documentary aired, the musical is making it's way to the screen with a cinematic adaptation arriving on Prime Video on September 17th.

Jamie always liked the idea of drag, and remembers first trying on his mum's clothes at 5 years old. Flamboyant from a young age, he was bullied though school and at 14 he decided it was time to come out as gay - he "didn't see a point in pretending [he] was straight". At 15 he started planning to come out as a drag queen after becoming jealous of the girls in his class talking about their prom dresses. When he first told his mum his idea she wasn't into it at first, but eventually she came round. The reason they decided to contact a film crew and make it into a documentary was a way to protect Jamie - they didn't think anyone was likely to attack him if there were cameras rolling.
During the documentary process, Jamie planned to take part in a drag performance on stage. This was meant to build his confidence before prom, but after the school threatened not to let him in if he wore a dress he put all his focus on this event as his drag debut - he even went as far as inviting his classmates to come watch. This is where everyone met his drag persona, Fifi La True. Jamie described Fifi as "the little creature that has been trying to get out [of him] for all these years". After the performance he continued with his plan to go to prom in a dress, but was denied access when he turned up. Luckily backlash from his peers and their parents made the school finally yield and let him take part in the event.
